What is our Sensory Key?

A ritual defines the soul of Southwest France: the Dordogne markets. More than just shopping spots, they are the heartbeat of an ancient tradition—one that invites you to savor the silence before the crowds fill the narrow stone streets.

In this guide, we reveal how to experience them authentically, from the famous mornings in Sarlat to the region’s most intimate hidden gems.

Don’t let the frantic pace of tourism steal the magic of your journey. While most people rush from stall to stall, we invite you to embrace the R.I.T.M.O. method: a slow-paced immersion where every flavor tells a story, and every family—regardless of their sensory needs—can find their own corner of peace.

Our Sarlat Experience

Out of all our trips to the Dordogne, the Sarlat-la-Canéda market remains our undisputed favorite. The secret is arriving on a Wednesday morning to enjoy an authentic French petit déjeuner before the crowd intensifies.

We are lucky to have a son, who eats like an adult and tries everything—a rare trait that makes market visits an adventure. He provides the perfect balance to the specific dietary needs of our daughter, who experiences flavors and textures differently. Together, they are the reason we seek out both the boldest local delicacies and those essential “Quiet Spaces”.

We always leave with a couple of barquettes of strawberries that, as you might guess, rarely make it back to our lodgings intact.

Night Markets: A magical dinner under the stars

While mornings at the Dordogne Markets are for stocking the pantry, nights are for celebrating. The Marchés Gourmands are the essence of summer: communal open-air dinners where town squares fill with tables, music, and local flavor.

Golden Rule: Bring your own cutlery, plates, and glasses. The producers provide the food, but you set the table. It is the ultimate ritual to feel like a true Périgord local.

Expert Tip: To fully enjoy these night Dordogne Markets, we’ve put together our own “picnic kit.” These are the essentials that make our evenings easier and more stylish:

Logistics & Navigation: Drive Safely to the Dordogne Markets

Driving through the Périgord is a beautiful experience, but it requires smart planning. While main roads are excellent, navigating to the smaller, authentic Dordogne Markets can be tricky. Google Maps often calculates the shortest distance, which in this region frequently leads to unpaved tracks or narrow back roads that are simply not suitable for larger vehicles.

Our favorite navigation tools:

  • Garmin dēzl GPS: Our top pick for total safety. Enter your motorhome dimensions and drive worry-free. *
  • ViaMichelin (Free): An excellent free alternative, as long as you select the ‘large vehicle’ profile.
